“¡Ya estamos en el Downtown 5 de Mayo Festival en Wilmington, Delaware! ¡Los esperamos!” – Posted on Facebook at 4:22 pm, May 4, 2018 by the Mexican Cultural Center Philadelphia, the nonprofit arm of the Consulate of Mexico.

A weekend of celebrations of Mexican culture kicked off on Market last Friday night, as the city celebrated Cinco de Mayo on Cuatro de Mayo. It was the first big party on the Philadelphia Consulate of Mexico’s “Mexican Week” schedule, drawing families from around the region for the food, the music and some dancing in the street. We checked in with festival Vice President India Colon to see how things went:

“Everything kicked off just as planned at 4 p.m. We had the music under control until about 5, just because there were businesses up and running, but then the first live band went on and that really brought in the downtown happy hour crowd.”

“We had close to 2,000 people throughout the event. We made it so kids 15 and under were free this year, so we definitely had a greater influx of families with children. They were actually the ones to start off the dancing. I think that was my favorite moment, the children dancing. There was this one traditional dance group who were just jumping and dancing … and they really got the kids out.”

“The Mexican Consulate from Philadelphia serves the entire tri-state Delaware Valley area, and they had six traditional garments from Mexico flown in, and brought six young ladies to dress in that attire. They gave some history of the Cinco de Mayo holiday and educated the community. And that community came from so many different places. A lot were from the local Wilmington area, but many were business people who stayed for a few hours before they went back home, and we had a pretty good number of people from Pennsylvania and New Jersey. We promoted this all the way up to Kennett and all the way down to Seaford. This event really started off the weekend for the community, and they came out.”
