UDAIRY CREAMERY: "8TH AND MARKET"
Where are we? The brand-new UDairy Creamery outpost that opened its doors last week, next to Chelsea Tavern between 8th and 9th streets on Market.
What we’re eating: A double scoop of UDairy Creamery’s “8th and Market” in a waffle cone, with some Blue Hen-approved sprinkles.
What UDairy says about this flavor: It is Chocolate ice cream with mini marshmallows and a chocolate sandwich cookie swirl.
Who suggested it? LeeAnne Ahamad, UDairy Creamery Market Manager.
How do they come up with new flavors? “The students we have working here get to dream up their own flavors. Everyone who works here, other than myself, is currently in the associate in arts program at UD's Wilmington campus, right around the corner. It's really driven solely by them. For ‘8th and Market’ [which was created at the Newark location before the Wilmington store opened], the students thought about the cobblestones on Market Street. So, they came up with chocolate ice cream with chocolate cookies and mini marshmallows. That was the thought process. There’s no recipe. You just start dreaming of things, and it goes from there.”
What else is popular? “We also have ‘Holy Fluffernutter’ which is a peanut butter ice cream with marshmallow swirls and chocolate chips. We also have ‘1st State Cobbler,’ which has peach ice cream. We have a great peach harvest in Delaware.”
So what’s next on the menu? “We’re rolling out hot food this week. Burgers and grilled cheese start Thursday, June 1. Everything is local. The beef comes from campus, and everything else – from cheeses to vegetables – comes from within 100 miles of the area.”
Tell us why we’re about to gain five pounds: “We're going to be open seven days a week, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Grand has been a great partner already, and on the nights they have shows, we plan to stay open later to capture the late night crowd!”
