CITY RESTAURANT WEEK: WHAT LOOKS GOOD FROM WILMINGTON'S FOOD TOURISM BLOGGER

Our first NewMarketWilm Meetup at Ernest & Scott coincided (not by coincidence!) with the start of City Restaurant Week (CRW) in Wilmington this year, and many of our NMW staffers and new Meetup friends stayed on Market for dinner.

So, what looks good? We decided to ask NMW content curator (and Wilmington’s food tourism blogger) Matt Sullivan what he’d order at each of the six Market restaurants participating. Lunches during Restaurant Week are $15 for two courses and dinners are $35 for three courses, through Saturday. (You can check out all the menus here.) Matt’s picks:

Chelsea Tavern

Lunch:

• Red curry and lemongrass soup with bok choy, wild mushrooms

• Kobe beef burger with smoked pimento cheese, cipollini onion rings, house-baked brioche bun, steak fries

Dinner:

• Cornmeal crusted calamari with sweet ginger garlic sauce

• Maine lobster & crab risotto

• Ricotta beignets rolled in cinnamon sugar

“Chelsea knows burgers. They’re a past winner of the Delaware Burger Battle, and this CRW burger looks like it could be a contender in 2017. That soup should brace you well for the lunch burger. Lunch and dinner both have a lighter roasted beet and feta cheese salad that probably looks great to people who like beets.”

Cocina Lolo

Lunch:

• Guacamole with crumbled queso fresco and salsa fresca

• Grilled skirt steak quesadilla with roasted poblano peppers

Dinner:

• Tuna "Dice" with tuna, citrus, soy, red onion, sesame, avocado, cilantro and chips

• Mole poblano chicken enchilada with queso fresco

• Cinnamon dusted churro with spicy hazelnut & caramel sauce and vanilla bean ice cream

”So many lunch options here – it looks like they’ve put most of their regular tacos, quesadillas and burritos on the CRW lunch menu. That steak quesadilla is a grown up version of a kids’ comfort food classic. I can’t go into Lolo without ordering some of their guac, so I’d probably try to gather a group for dinner, order a round of crab guacamole before the first course, and plan to roll outta there.

Ernest & Scott Taproom

Lunch:

• Roasted carrot bisque

• Caribbean Ahi tuna salad with mango, hearts of palm, cucumber, avocado, crispy garbanzo beans, mixed greens, pineapple coconut vinaigrette

Dinner:

• Spinach salad with red wine poached pears, gorgonzola, candied pecans

• Steak Frites: grilled filet mignon, parmesan truffle steak fries, grilled asparagus

• Caramel apple pie

“If my heart could take it, I could live off steak frites, and that dinner set-up looks great. So does caramel apple pie. For lunch, that Ahi salad sounds like it’s packed with flavor without being too heavy, which is perfect for a midday meal.”

The Green Room at the Hotel du Pont

Lunch:

• Caesar salad with boquerones anchovies, brioche crouton

• Pan-roasted salmon, herb couscous, aspiration, lemon caper butter

Dinner:

• House smoked salmon with pickled red onion, capers, hard-boiled egg, sour cream

• Short rib of beef with whipped potato and parsnip, wilted greens

• Dark chocolate ginger fallen soufflé torte

“I’m a sucker for a good Caesar with anchovy, and the last time I had salmon at the Green Room, it was cooked perfectly. I actually just interviewed Executive Pastry Chef Michele Mitchell for this month’s Delaware Today, and she told me that whatever chocolate dessert they have on the menu is almost always the top seller. Looking at that fallen soufflé torte, I think I know why.”

La Fia Bakery + Market + Bistro

Lunch:

• Curried lentil soup with coconut milk, Greek yogurt, candied pear, toasted pistachio

• La Fia Burger with Cabot cheddar, zesty mayo, lettuce, tomato, soft burger roll

Dinner:

• Grilled Spanish octopus with layered potato-prosciutto lasagna and shishito peppers

• Braised veal cheeks with cheddar bread pudding, roasted maitake mushrooms & turnips, pearl onion, bordelaise

• And a TBA dessert

“This one was brutal – there are many, many options on the La Fia restaurant week menu. The house-made roll puts the burger over the top for lunch, and I’ve really enjoyed the grilled octopus dishes that have come out of that kitchen in the past. For a dinner entrée, I’d be just as likely to order the bucati rigati, the risotto with wild Gulf shrimp or the pan-seared crispy skin Pocono trout. In fact, I’m changing my mind right now. Get the trout.”

Merchant Bar

Dinner only:

• Tuna Poke with ahi tuna, soy, avocado, scallion, crushed macadamia nuts, sesame seeds, tortilla chips

• Mussels and frites with crusty baguette

• Vanilla semifreddo drops

“I’ll admit, I looked at this menu with an eye toward what would pair well with the cocktails I’d usually order at Merchant. Folks with hungrier appetites might go for the classic lamb meatballs and the smoked KC baby back ribs. “
