WHAT'S COMING TO MARKET IN 2017
The ball drops, the calendar turns, the kids go back to school … and just like that, it’s a new year, with new possibilities, new directions, and new life on Market. The city changed hands this week, as the 56th mayor of Wilmington was inaugurated right on Market, in front of a packed house at The Grand. (If you missed it during your holiday hibernation vacation, you can find our chat with Mayor Mike Purzycki here.)
But what else will 2017 bring?
Lots of new eats, or so our sources say. We’ve heard tasty rumors that Market might be getting something so desperately needed – a takeout burger joint, the kind of place you can stop in for a cheeseburger and a shake at lunchtime. (Will there be shakes? We hope there will be shakes.) Beer should be brewing on Market come springtime, with local BBQ guru Dan Sheridan opening a new joint near The Grand. There’s also talk of an upscale Italian concept from the guys who currently make Market’s best slice at DiMeo’s Pizzaiuoli Napulitani … and more to come later in the year.
Look for Market to increasingly become a place for start-ups and not-so-quiet upstarts, catering to entrepreneurs and freelancing creatives alongside its current corporate towers. Factory Berlin, Europe’s largest startup incubator, will open the doors on its new space on Market this spring (its first in the United States), while 1313 Innovation inside the Hercules Plaza will become 1313 Innovation Powered by Benjamin's Desk, creating some natural synergies with co-workers in seven other Benjamin’s Desk locations in the Philly area.
Expect the music to get louder – and not just from inside The Grand and The Queen. This is the year the Ladybug Music Festival celebrating female artists becomes a two-day event on July 20-21, after bringing together 7,000 people to Market with concert headliners Mary Lambert and Caroline Rose in 2016. OperaDelaware’s 2017 Spring Festival brings world-class artists to The Grand for Cinderella and Semiramide at the end of April and beginning of May. And Market Street’s own David Bromberg will bring his Big Noise music festival a little closer to home this spring. Listen for that noise to come from the far end of Market, as Bromberg brings his big band to Tubman-Garrett Riverfront Park on May 20. A full line-up and tickets should be available soon.
